Justice Briki-Okolosi Restates ACJL Monitoring Committee’s Determination to Speed Up Justice Delivery in Delta.
The Delta State Chairman of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law Monitoring Committee, Hon. Justice Godwin Briki-Okolosi , has reaffirmed the Committee’s determination to ensure that there was accelerated justice delivery in the state.
Hon. Justice Godwin Briki-Okolosi stated this while speaking with journalists shortly after he led the members of the Committee on a meeting together with the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ekemejero Ohwovoriole SAN, who is also a member of the committee in his office at the Ministry of Justice Asaba.
He said that the Committee was established under section 6 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Delta State, 2022, stressing that the functions of the committee included the the monitoring of the implementation of Administration of Criminal Justice Law.
Hon. Justice Briki-Okolosi, who stated that the Law had over 700 sections, noted that there was need for the stakeholders including the Judges, the magistrates, the police, DSS and the custodians of the correctional centres to appreciate the entire provision of the law.
He said that the Committee existed to see that each of the stakeholders in the justice sector understood their roles and carry out their responsibility effectively, adding that one of the constraints of the Committee was as a result of the fact that it was new.
Justice Briki-Okolosi said that the funding was another critical challenge to every organ of government, adding that outside funding, the stakeholders should understand their role and set out plan of action so that the funding would come
He noted that the government needed to provide vehicles for correctional centres so that there would be no unnecessary delay in trials of defendants , emphasizing that without funding and provision of vehicles it would be difficult to produce inmates to the courts around the state.
The ACJ Law Monitoring Committee Chairman stated that each of the 5 correctional centres in Delta state had over 60 places either the High Court, Magistrate court , Area Courts and District Courts where they usually produced inmates but faced with lack of sufficient vehicles.
Hon. Justice Briki-Okolosi said that when defendants are reminded in custodies and the trial processes are delayed, it would lead to congestion of the custodial Centres.
