Rivers Assembly to Impeach Fubara Amidst Fresh Crisis

In a dramatic turn of events, the Rivers State House of Assembly has issued a stern warning to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, threatening to resume impeachment proceedings if he continues to violate the constitution.

Speaker Martin Amaewhule, accompanied by 26 members of the Assembly, delivered this ultimatum during a press briefing in Port Harcourt.

The lawmakers accused Governor Fubara of failing to uphold his commitments under the Presidential Peace Accord, which he voluntarily endorsed. Amaewhule condemned what he described as the governor’s deliberate disregard for constitutional obligations. A communique issued by the lawmakers highlighted their resilience in the face of orchestrated attacks on the integrity of the House. Despite challenges, they reaffirmed their dedication to upholding the rule of law and defending democratic principles.

The press statement further revealed the Assembly’s concerns regarding recent criticisms leveled against them by certain political figures. Notably, the “Former Rivers State PDP Presidential Campaign Council” came under scrutiny for questioning the legality of the Assembly and launching personal attacks against its members.

The Assembly refuted these allegations, emphasizing its legitimacy and commitment to serving the interests of the people of Rivers State. They accused the critics of attempting to undermine the institution of the legislature and disrupt the peace and stability of the state.

Moreover, the Assembly expressed disappointment with individuals who, having previously opposed Governor Fubara and President Abubakar, now profess support for them. They cautioned against political opportunism and urged for genuine commitment to the welfare of the state.

Despite withdrawing a previous notice of impeachment out of respect for the presidency, the Assembly warned that they would not hesitate to pursue impeachment if necessary. They reiterated their duty to uphold the constitution and hold public officials accountable for their actions.
