Agbor — In a continued effort to rid Delta State of criminal elements, operatives of Operation Delta Sweep on Wednesday intercepted four young men in a vehicle at the Owa-Alero Junction in Agbor. The arrest, which followed credible intelligence, led to the recovery of a loaded rifle, four cartridges, and substances suspected to be Indian hemp.
According to security sources, the suspects were intercepted during a routine stop-and-search operation. Upon inspection, a fully loaded rifle was discovered in the vehicle alongside four live cartridges and a stash of suspected narcotics. The items were immediately seized, and the suspects were taken into custody for further investigation.
One of the suspects, identified as Mr. Francis, reportedly admitted ownership of the rifle and the cartridges. During interrogation, he claimed he had acquired the weapon after being attacked by a group of hoodlums in the past. He further stated that he had kept the firearm for personal protection ever since.
However, conflicting narratives emerged from other occupants of the vehicle. A second suspect, Mr. Abraham Ominado, 26, a resident of Agbor, initially attempted to flee upon sighting the police van. After being apprehended, he claimed ignorance of the firearm, insisting he was merely offered a lift by Mr. Francis.
Two other individuals in the vehicle corroborated Mr. Ominado’s account, stating they were unaware of the firearm and were only passengers in the vehicle. They denied any knowledge or involvement in the possession of the illegal items.
Security officials say investigations are ongoing to verify the claims and establish the individual culpability of each suspect. The items recovered have been sent for forensic analysis, while the suspects remain in custody pending further action.
The Delta State security task force has received commendation for their vigilance and professionalism. Operation Delta Sweep continues its statewide effort to rid communities of criminal elements and ensure a safer environment for law-abiding citizens.
