The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says five of its operatives have been killed by reckless motorists in different parts of the country.
The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, has directed the immediate prosecution of those responsible, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide.
The incidents occurred in the Ekiti Sector Command on September 6, Ogun on September 8, Taraba on September 15, Jos By-Pass Unit on September 19, and Obollo Afor Unit Command on September 24.
“Their deaths are not mere statistics. They represent human lives — fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, and breadwinners — cut short in the line of duty while safeguarding Nigerian roads,” Mohammed said.
He expressed concern over the growing risks faced by FRSC personnel, noting that beyond speeding vehicles, officers are increasingly targeted by kidnappers and violent attacks.
The Corps Marshal warned that the FRSC would no longer tolerate acts that endanger its operatives, stressing that offenders will face the full weight of the law.
He also directed staff nationwide to be more alert and prioritise their safety while on duty. “You need to be safe and alive to save others,” he said.
Mohammed added that the Corps is engaging relevant authorities to strengthen protection for its personnel and installations, “not as an act of aggression but as a safeguard to deter assaults.”
He commiserated with the families of the deceased and urged Nigerians to honour their sacrifice by obeying traffic laws and respecting FRSC officials.
“Disregard for traffic laws and the safety of FRSC personnel will attract serious sanctions and legal consequences going forward,” he warned
