At least 29 senior officers in the Nigeria Police Force are set to be dismissed following the removal of Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun.
The shake-up is expected to affect several Deputy Inspectors General and Assistant Inspectors General as part of a broader restructuring.
Reporters had earlier revealed that President Bola Tinubu ordered Egbetokun’s removal, a move confirmed by senior police sources and officials within the Police Service Commission.
An official announcement is expected soon, with Tunji Disu, who heads the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Alagbon, Lagos, named as his successor.
Sources disclosed that Egbetokun was summoned to the Presidential Villa and directed to prepare his handover notes before stepping aside.
His departure reportedly sparked celebrations among some officers.
His tenure had drawn criticism over an extension beyond the statutory retirement age and allegations of internal favouritism within the force.
Controversies also trailed claims of rapid promotions linked to his office and reports that ₦100 million from Anambra State’s security vote was traced to his son’s account.
Court orders later restricted further publications about him and his family, deepening debate over press freedom and accountability within the force.
