In a recent interview shared by Channels Television, Security Consultant Bulama Bukarti raised fresh concerns over the evolving threat posed by insurgents in Nigeria’s northeast.
Speaking during the programme, Bukarti warned that the nature of the insurgency has changed significantly, stressing that the group is no longer operating as a loosely organized force. Instead, he described a more structured and deeply rooted system that has taken hold in remote areas beyond the reach of regular civilian life.
According to him, Boko Haram has established a form of parallel governance in territories under its influence. He stated, “Boko Haram has courts, prisons, markets, villages, and large farms where they produce food,” highlighting the extent of control the group now exercises in certain regions.
Bukarti explained that this level of organization allows the insurgents to sustain their operations, recruit fighters, and maintain authority over local populations. He noted that such developments make it more difficult for conventional military strategies to achieve lasting success.
The security expert emphasized the urgent need for a more aggressive and coordinated response. He called for intensified ground operations, improved intelligence gathering, and stronger collaboration among regional forces.
He also stressed that reclaiming these territories would require dismantling the structures that enable the group to function as a self-sustaining entity within Nigeria’s borders.
