A Nigerian mother of four, Adetutu Koleosho, has opened up about her deeply emotional battle with breast cancer and the remarkable sacrifice her husband made to save her life.
In an interview with The Punch, Adetutu, who lives in Sagamu, explained that her health struggle began in 2023 while she was six months pregnant. She said she first noticed a small lump in her breast, roughly the size of a groundnut, which she initially dismissed as a normal pregnancy-related change. However, the lump quickly increased in size within weeks, leading to discomfort and growing concern.
Following medical examinations, she was diagnosed on November 23, 2023, with invasive grade 3 breast cancer—news she described as both shocking and life-altering.
She recounted that the journey afterward placed a heavy emotional and financial strain on her family. Initially, they spent over ₦2 million on alternative treatments that proved ineffective before eventually turning to conventional medical care, including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery.
To afford the treatment, her husband made a profound sacrifice, selling his only property along with other valuable possessions to ensure she received proper care. She described his decision as a critical moment that helped sustain her fight for survival, stating that he gave up everything he owned to support her treatment.
Adetutu also shared that her diagnosis affected her relationships, as some friends distanced themselves during her illness. Despite these setbacks, she remains optimistic and focused on advocacy.
Now a survivor, she encourages people to prioritize regular medical screenings, emphasizing that early detection is crucial and that cancer can affect anyone
