Human rights lawyers and civil society groups have demanded strict punishment, including the death penalty , for dismissed police officer Nuhu Usman over the alleged extrajudicial killing of Oghenemine Ogidi in Delta State .
The officer, formerly attached to the Effurun division of the Nigeria Police Force , was reportedly caught on video shooting the victim while he was handcuffed, sparking nationwide outrage.
Rights advocates, including lawyer Festus Ogun , insisted that justice must be handled transparently by the state and not compromised. They also vowed to closely monitor the prosecution process.
The President of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights , Debo Adeniran , warned against any attempt to cover up the incident, while others linked the case to past police brutality that led to the EndSARS protest .
Lawyer Ayo Ademiluyi said the incident reflects ongoing concerns about police violence, despite past reforms.
Another legal practitioner, Inihebe Effiong , called for further sanctions within the police hierarchy, including action against senior officers in Delta State.
Meanwhile, civil society leaders have also urged authorities to introduce mandatory psychological evaluations for armed officers. Kenny Bakare of the Civil Liberties Organisation stressed that mental fitness checks are necessary before officers are allowed to carry weapons.
The groups warned that failure to ensure justice could deepen public anger and erode trust in law enforcement institutions.
