The Kano State Government has launched an amnesty and rehabilitation programme targeting 1,500 repentant political thugs as part of efforts to curb violence, drug abuse, and other related crimes in the state.
The initiative, described as the “Kano model of Operation Safe Corridor,” is aimed at providing affected youths with opportunities for rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is leading the programme, which includes counselling, orientation, and civic education designed to discourage involvement in criminal activities and promote peaceful engagement.

As part of the rollout, government officials carried out inspections at the Kano State Institute of Corporate Security, which will serve as one of the centres for the rehabilitation exercise.
The programme is being implemented in partnership with security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), to ensure proper monitoring and support for participants.
According to the state government, the initiative is part of a broader strategy to reduce crime and address youth restiveness across Kano State through non-violent intervention measures.
However, the programme has generated mixed reactions, with some members of the public questioning its timing and expressing concerns over the possibility of political influence, especially around election periods.Observers warns that similar amnesty initiatives in the past have been linked to electoral cycles, where groups described as “repentant thugs” were previously associated with political violence and intimidation.
The state government, however, maintains that the programme is a genuine rehabilitation effort aimed at promoting long-term peace, stability, and social reintegration for vulnerable youths in the state.
