Father Jailed for Just One Year Over S£xual Relationship With Biological Daughter Who Later Took Her Own Life.

A California father who admitted to having an inc£stuous relationship with his biological daughter has been sentenced to one year in jail and three years of felony probation, a punishment that has sparked outrage.

Stephen Vincent Chavez, 41, received the sentence after pleading guilty in May 2026 to one felony count of inc£st and one misdemeanor count of providing alcohol to a minor, according to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office. Despite the seriousness of the case, he avoided a state prison sentence.

The sentence drew criticism as prosecutors had sought the maximum three-year prison term, describing the case as a grave ab¥se of parental trust. However, an open plea agreement allowed Judge Dusty Kawai to determine the punishment independently.

The judge said he could not impose the maximum sentence under California law because Chavez had no prior criminal record. Prosecutors also considered additional charges, including r@pe, but concluded that inc£st was the only felony offence supported by the available evidence and legal standards.

The offence took place in July 2025 while Makayla Rene Settles was staying at her father’s home. Prosecutors said Chavez bought more alcohol for himself and his daughter after a family gathering before engaging in a s£xual relationship with her.

Makayla later di+d in December 2025 after taking her own life at the age of 18. The sentence has sparked backlash, with critics noting that prosecutors had sought a three-year prison term that the court declined to impose.
