Residents of Uneme Akpama in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State are grappling with the revelation of an alleged fake kidnapping plot involving two men, Lucky Alabi and Taiye Enahoro, who purportedly schemed to extort ₦4 million from family members.
According to the Edo State Police Command, the 48-year-old Alabi and 37-year-old Enahoro were arrested after an investigation showed Alabi’s disappearance was staged.
Enahoro allegedly contacted Alabi’s relatives, claiming he had been kidnapped and demanded a ransom.
Operatives of the Igarra Police Division uncovered the deception through gathered intelligence.
Both suspects have confessed to their roles, and they will be charged to court after the investigation is completed.
This incident has triggered fresh concerns about the rising cases of fake kidnappings in Edo State, with speculation about whether worsening economic conditions are prompting some individuals to engage in desperate and criminal acts.
The community, which is largely farming-based, finds the development particularly surprising.
The Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, has warned that staging kidnappings or any form of criminal deception will attract the full weight of the law.
He also urged the public to promptly report any suspicious activities.
