The Catholic Diocese of Lokoja has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of one of its priests, Rev. Fr. Samuel Opeyemi Oyetoro, who was reportedly killed by yet-to-be-identified assailants in Ajaokuta, Kogi State.
According to reports, the cleric was attacked and sustained multiple stab wounds before his body was allegedly abandoned by the roadside. His remains were discovered on Wednesday, July 29, 2026.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, and security agencies have yet to release an official statement on the killing or announce any arrests in connection with the case.
Rev. Fr. Oyetoro was born in Egbe, Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, and hailed from Ayetoro in Ijumu Local Government Area of the state.
Until his death, he served as a priest at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Egbe, where he was known for his pastoral work and commitment to the spiritual growth of his parishioners.
Confirming the incident, the Catholic Diocese of Lokoja issued a statement announcing the priest's passing and called on members of the clergy and the faithful to remember him in their prayers.
The Diocese urged priests, religious and lay faithful to pray for the peaceful repose of the late cleric's soul, while also asking for prayers and support for his grieving family and parish community.
“We kindly request all priests, religious and Laity to pray for the peaceful repose of his soul during their Holy Masses and personal prayers and to pray for strength and consolation for his aged parents, siblings, parishioners and their entire Diocese of Lokoja during this time of grief,” the statement read.
The killing has left members of the Catholic community in shock, with many expressing sadness over the loss of the priest and calling for a thorough investigation to identify those responsible.
