Investigation has revealed that Moferewa Maiye, a die-hard supporter of Bola Tinubu used part of the money he stole from motorists while impersonating a Department of State Services (DSS) operative to host X Spaces campaigning for Tinubu’s re-election and attacking opposition members, before he was arrested by DSS operatives in Abuja.
Maiye was arrested at his hideout around NITEL Junction, along Adetokunbo Ademola Way, Wuse II, Abuja, after DSS operatives received intelligence about his activities.
At the time of his arrest, he was reportedly dressed in a DSS tactical uniform and had a fake pistol in his possession.
A security source said Maiye allegedly used the uniform and fake weapon to intimidate commuters and motorists before extorting money from them.
Maiye had reportedly gained attention on X for hosting political Spaces in support of Tinubu and attacking opposition figures and their supporters.
Reports alleged that he used part of the money obtained through his alleged extortion activities to organise and host some of the X Spaces as he pushed for Tinubu’s re-election.
During interrogation, Maiye reportedly claimed that his late brother, identified as Monday Maiye, was a DSS operative and that the uniform and other items recovered from him belonged to his deceased brother.
The DSS is investigating how Maiye obtained the uniform and equipment and the extent of his alleged impersonation and extortion activities.
The Service is also expected to establish the source of the money allegedly obtained from motorists and whether proceeds from the alleged extortion were used to finance his online political activities.
Maiye remains in custody as investigations continue
