Men of the Nigeria Police in Akwa Ibom have uncovered an illegal maternity home involved in child trafficking, unlawful medical practice, and impersonation.
While confirming the development in a statement on Friday in Uyo, the Police Spokesperson in the state, Timfon John, revealed that the facility was discovered in Usung Atiat, Abak Local Government Area.
According to John, security operatives raided the premises based on credible intelligence, leading to the arrest of a female suspect who had been harboring seven pregnant women and five infants aged between two weeks and one year.
“Further search led to the recovery of various medical supplies, including syringes, drip lines, herbs, and immunization records, for which the suspect had no legal authorization,” she said.
At the time of filing this report, the rescued women are under protective care, while investigations are ongoing to uncover other collaborators and ensure justice is served.
