The Delta State Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary Ministry of Justice, Mr. Omamuzo Erebe has stated that the Ministry was committed to ensuring that all its staff are trained and updated with the current modern trends both in the performance of their duties.
The Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary gave this comment at the commencement of two separate capacity building training programmes for staff of the Ministry.
The first training programme was for State Counsel in the Ministry on the act of handling matters at the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.
The in-house resource person, Mr. Charles Agbagwu took participants through the various stages of initiating and defence of both civil and criminal appeal matters.
The interactive training session saw participants involved in simulation and role play of matters at the appellate courts and how State Counsel should file written briefs to ensure successful outcomes of their matters.
Participants at the programme were drawn from the headquarters Office and the eleven Zonal Offices of the Ministry.
The second capacity building training was a two day programme on Financial Accounting Practices and Ethics For Finance and Accounts staff.
The training was for staff working in the Department of Finance and the Administrator General and Public Trustee offices.
Declaring the training open, Mr Omamuzo Erebe stated that non-legal and paralegal staff are key components of any modern-day law office.
He stated that the job of the State Counsel can not be effectively handled in the absence of well trained support staff.
He stated that the training would enrich the knowledge of staff in the Department and equip them with the requisite knowledge to discharge their duties.
The lead resource person, Mr. Emeka Egwele took participants on various aspects of the accounting process that the staff perform daily on their job.
He stated that the more they refresh themselves on modern trends in the accounting field, the better their performance would be and thanked the organizers for the initiative.
One of the participants, Mr. Samuel Temiatse stated that the training exercise had helped to broaden his horizon and would impact positively on the performance of his duties.
The series of Capacity Building Training programmes are part of the Ministry of Justice work plan for 2025.
The Capacity Building Training will continue on the 9th and 10th of April with officers of the Ministries of Lands and Surveys, Urban Renewal, and Delta Development and Property Authority (DDPA) having a training on the methods of acquisition, compensation and service of notices.
On the 10th of April, officials in the Department of Advisory Services will take their turn in the training exercise, which will focus on the preparation of legal opinions and legal advice to other MDA’s.
