Former Edo State Governor, Lucky Igbinedion, has expressed indifference toward the recent wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing such political shifts as typical behavior among Nigerian politicians.
Igbinedion made these remarks on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, after leading a delegation of PDP leaders from Edo State on a condolence visit to former Senate Chief Whip, Sir Rowland Owie, following the death of his wife, Lady Helen Owie.
A long-standing member of the PDP since 1998, Igbinedion predicted that many of those leaving the party would eventually return—either to the PDP or another dominant political platform that might emerge in the future.
Commenting on efforts to build a political coalition to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election, Igbinedion voiced support for a southern presidential candidate.
“I’m not overly concerned about the defections because I understand the nature of Nigerian politics—politicians often switch sides,” he said. “Tomorrow, you’ll likely see many of these defectors returning to the PDP. We’ve seen this cycle before; the PDP once had the most governors across the country. Today it’s the APC, but their time will pass too. Only God knows which party will dominate next.”
He added, “I’ve remained in the PDP since 1998 and have no plans to leave. I believe in fairness, and that’s why I support a southern president for 2027. After that, by 2031, it should be the North’s turn, and I’ll evaluate who’s best for the job at that time.”
