Former Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress following his defeat in the party’s governorship primary election in Nasarawa State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Adamu, who sought the party’s governorship ticket, lost to Ahmed Wadada after polling 49,675 votes in the primary election. Wadada emerged victorious with 195,285 votes to secure the party’s ticket.
Following the outcome of the exercise, the former police chief raised concerns over alleged attempts to manipulate the process, expressing dissatisfaction with how the primary was conducted.
In a resignation letter addressed to APC executives in Makama Ward, Lafia, on Monday, Adamu announced his immediate exit from the ruling party, saying recent developments had made it difficult for him to continue his political journey under its platform.
According to him, the decision was reached after careful consideration and was influenced largely by concerns surrounding the governorship primary process in Nasarawa State.
“Today I addressed my letter to the ward executives, especially the ward chairman, on my decision to resign from the All Progressives Congress (APC), with immediate effect,” he stated.
“This decision was not taken lightly. However, recent developments within the party, especially the conduct of the governorship primary election processes in Nasarawa State, have made it difficult for me to continue with my political activities under the platform of the party.”
Adamu said he strongly believes internal democracy, fairness, transparency and equal opportunity should form the foundation of any democratic political party.
He argued that the conduct of the primary election failed to reflect those principles and had eroded his confidence in the party’s leadership and structures in the state.
“Unfortunately, the events surrounding the primary election did not reflect these principles and have led to loss of confidence in the party’s leadership and processes in the state,” he added.
The former IGP thanked party members and supporters for their support during his stay in the APC and declared his intention to continue pursuing his political ambition through another platform.
