ASABA/Nigeria: Residents of Asaba were thrown into panic and frustration after a heavy overnight rainfall inundated major parts of the city, submerging DLA Road near Standard Life and disrupting movement across affected areas.
The flooding, which spilled into homes and rendered roads impassable, left many residents stranded indoors as early morning activities came to a halt in one of the state capital’s busy neighbourhoods.
Eyewitnesses described the situation as distressing, with floodwaters overwhelming drainage channels and taking over residential surroundings.
A resident, Mrs. Florence Orizu, expressed frustration over the disruption to her daily routine, saying she was unable to leave her home due to the extent of the flooding.
“I cannot go to work, and even stepping out of my house is a big problem because of the flood,” she said, calling on authorities to urgently address the recurring situation.
The incident has once again heightened concerns over persistent flooding in parts of Asaba, especially in areas prone to heavy water accumulation after rainfall.
Meanwhile, sections of Okpanam Road, another major artery in the city, were also severely waterlogged, compounding the difficulties faced by commuters and residents navigating the metropolis.
Despite ongoing drainage and flood control measures, residents maintain that the situation remains unresolved, particularly during periods of intense rainfall.
Urban planning experts have consistently attributed the recurring flooding to inadequate drainage systems, blocked waterways and the city’s low-lying topography, which makes it vulnerable to water accumulation.
As affected residents count their losses and struggle with restricted movement, calls have intensified for urgent and sustainable interventions to tackle the perennial flooding challenge.
