The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has launched a large-scale manhunt after seven inmates escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ilesa, Osun State, following heavy rainfall that compromised the facility’s security.
According to Deputy Controller of Corrections and Public Relations Officer Umar Abubakar, the incident occurred around 2:00 AM on Tuesday, May 20, 2025. The flooding caused a breach in the prison’s defenses, enabling the inmates to flee.
The Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, has ordered an immediate investigation to uncover how the escape happened. The Correctional Service is collaborating with other security agencies and community leaders to track down and recapture the fugitives.
Authorities are urging the public to assist by providing any information that could help apprehend the escapees. Tips can be reported to the nearest security office or via the NCoS Response Desk at 07087086005, 09060004598, or 08075050006.
