Bashir El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has made a bold political prediction ahead of the 2027 general elections, suggesting that Labour Party’s Peter Obi, paired with a strong Northern running mate, could decisively defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu even before midday on election day.
In a post on his verified X handle (formerly Twitter), Bashir acknowledged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as a major political figure, but asserted that Obi’s growing popularity, especially among Nigeria’s youth, gives him a unique and formidable edge in the coming electoral contest.
“Atiku is a force to be reckoned with,” El-Rufai wrote. “He also feels the stars have finally aligned in his favor. And although 2019 is thought to have been his best shot, this may be one of those ‘moment meets the man’ situations.”
However, El-Rufai was quick to draw attention to what he described as the “sheer force” of Obi’s grassroots support and “cult-like followership.”
“Obi’s appeal across the youth and this younger generation is one profound aspect of his leverage,” he noted.
In a humorous yet pointed jab at the current administration, El-Rufai added: “Obi as a flag bearer with a strong Northern candidate would defeat Pablo [referring to Tinubu] on Election Day before our dear mother of the Nation — Aunty Remi — finishes her breakfast around 12 noon.”
The remark has since gone viral, sparking debate across political circles and social media platforms, with many interpreting it as a sign of widening cracks within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and a hint of changing political alliances ahead of 2027.
Peter Obi, who ran as the Labour Party presidential candidate in 2023 and finished third behind Tinubu and Atiku, has continued to maintain strong support among Nigerian youth and urban voters. His potential re-entry into the 2027 race, especially with a well-chosen northern vice-presidential candidate, could reshape the political landscape.
