Residents of Afiesere Community in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State have cried out for assistance, following a sudden flooding, occasione by torrential rainfall that submerged their houses and business centers.
According to community sources, the rains which started on Saturday, Sept. 9th, have continued to fall almost non-stop, flooding residential homes, churches, business centers and farmlands as many residents were forced to vacuate their homes to seek temporary shelter in other places.
Reacting to the situation, the community President-General, Comrade Luke Umukoro, said the flooding was not unconnected to factors such as poor construction of houses, untarred Street roads and poor community drainage system, and therefore appealed to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to come to their aid.
“Most of the flooded compounds were poorly constructed, no standard drainage system and many of the street roads are not tarred, although the contract for some of them have been awarded. I want to appeal to our amiable and workaholic governor to come to our aid.
A resident of the community, Mrs Regina Okoyoyo, said her residence had been completely submerged for two days now as she and her children have been scooping water from their house. She implored the state government fo assistance.
“Flood has taken over this compound for two days now. Look at the way the whole compound looks like a miniature river. Me and my children bailed water all through yesterday. I want to appeal to the state government to help us with some relief funds so that we can move to a better place”, Okoyoyo said.
Also civil servant who identified himself as Abolodje Anthony lamented that the flood had affected him so much as the road leading to his residence has been covered up by the water, adding that he can no longer go out in his vehicle.
A member of Living Faith Church at Afiesere branch, brother Odeh Omonigho, said the flood was so massive that it covered the very high interlocked close entrance to the church auditorium, forcing worshippers to fold their trousers and skirts as they waded through the water.
“The flood was so much that it covered this high interlocked runway. We had to fold our trousers and skirts to be able to cross over to the Church auditorium. I want to appeal to our state government to please come to our assistance and help us construct a standard drainage system that will protect us from the impact of subsequent flooding,” Omonigho said.
