Amaju Pinnick, former President of the Nigerian Football Federation, has dismissed claims of financial mismanagement regarding the FIFA Goal Project in Kebbi State, describing the controversy as a misunderstanding.
The issue arose after FIFA shared a 2023 photo of the Kebbi Stadium under its Forward Programme. The image, showing an unfinished structure, sparked public criticism and questions about how the $1.2 million allocated for the project was spent.
Kabiru Amadu, Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, clarified that FIFA does not construct standard stadiums for countries, contradicting public assumptions about the Kebbi Stadium project.
Speaking on ARISE News, Pinnick defended the transparency of the project, noting FIFA’s strict oversight. He explained that the contract amount of $1.1 million in 2020 was properly accounted for and that there were no additional costs despite COVID-related delays.
“If FIFA gives you their money, they audit it completely. Everything went according to plan, with no variation in the contract, even in spite of COVID. People need to understand that,” Pinnick said, urging Nigerians to verify facts before passing judgment.
He emphasized that his administration remained committed to accountability and the development of football in Nigeria, appealing for accurate information before public criticism.
