A non-governmental and non-profit organization, has raised concerns over the allegedly non-inclusive empowerment initiative organized by Senate President Godswill Akpabio on December 30, 2024, in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.
The founder of MonITng, Ilevbaoje Uadamen, criticized the structure and execution of the programme, stating that it catered to a narrow group, leaving many deserving individuals without support. He emphasized the need for community involvement in the planning process to ensure that empowerment initiatives meet actual local needs.
Uadamen also warned of potential misuse of the programme’s benefits, noting that some recipients might resell the items, which would undermine the intended goals of the initiative.
“Empowerment programmes should be transparent, accountable, and inclusive,” Uadamen said. “Without these principles, they risk becoming mere publicity stunts rather than avenues for real impact.”
MonITng has called for a thorough review of the programme to ensure that public funds are used effectively and equitably. The organization urged policymakers to prioritize citizen engagement in future initiatives to guarantee that empowerment efforts reach those who need them most.
