The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru has stepped down from his position, bringing an abrupt end to his tenure at the helm of Nigeria’s defence establishment. His resignation, which takes immediate effect, was officially communicated to President Bola Tinubu in a letter dated December 1.
The development was confirmed on Monday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. According to him, Badaru whose full name is Mohammed Badaru Abubakar cited health reasons for his decision to withdraw from public service at this time.
Although the presidency did not disclose the nature of the health challenge, Onanuga stated that President Tinubu has acknowledged the minister’s decision and is expected to begin consultations on appointing a successor.
Badaru’s exit marks a significant moment for the Tinubu administration, particularly as the country continues to contend with a rise in security threats across various regions. His departure also comes amid ongoing calls for a more robust and strategic approach to Nigeria’s defence architecture.
Before his appointment as Defence Minister, Badaru served two terms as governor of Jigawa State between 2015 and 2023. He joined the federal cabinet in 2023 with the mandate to help strengthen national security, coordinate military operations, and support reforms within the armed forces.
The presidency is expected to make further announcements as the process of selecting his replacement progresses.
