Residents of Daneji and surrounding communities in Kano State were thrown into panic following the escape of a python from the residence of former Accountant General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris. The python, along with other wild animals including a crocodile and a lion cub, has since been retrieved and relocated to the Kano Zoo.
The python’s escape caused fear and unrest across Daneji, Mandawari, Kabara, and Soron Dinki, where residents reported sleepless nights until the reptile was safely captured. Some locals said they were aware of wild animals being kept at Idris’ property, but this marked the first time one had escaped.
Zoo Confirms Recovery of Animals
Speaking on the matter, the Managing Director of the Kano Zoo, Sadik Kura Muhammad, confirmed in a local radio interview that the zoo had taken custody of all the animals after Idris voluntarily surrendered them. The MD explained that while Idris had a valid license to own the animals, the concerns raised by neighbours prompted the handover.
“When I visited the residence, I confirmed that the animals had not yet reached a dangerous stage,” Muhammad said. “However, once such animals mature, they must be transferred to the zoo. For safety, the license must be renewed annually, and at that point, the animals must be in government custody.”
He further clarified that under Nigeria’s Wild Animal Law, individuals can obtain licenses to keep certain species—including both endangered and non-endangered animals—so long as conditions for safety, habitat, and proper care are met.
“Endangered species like vultures and parrots must not be kept for private amusement. They can only be housed in zoos to aid conservation,” Muhammad added.
He assured residents that the evacuation was conducted at night, and the animals are now secure at the Kano Zoo.
Police Launch Investigation
Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has confirmed that the state command has launched an investigation into the matter. He revealed that Ahmed Idris has been invited for questioning regarding the legality and safety of housing wild animals in a residential area.
Residents Voice Fears and Frustrations
Several residents spoke with reporters about the ordeal, describing the days of anxiety they experienced.
“We were sleeping with one eye open,” said Aminu Balarabe, a resident of Daneji. “Even if it’s just a cub or a small python, safety is not something to joke with.”
Another resident, Hayatuddeen Muhammad, argued that wild animals should never be housed in residential neighborhoods.
“That house is surrounded by many others. It’s not the right location for such animals,” he said. “Even though Idris is a kind person to the community, this is a serious risk.”
Usman Yunusa, who lives further away from the residence, said he only became aware of the wild animals after the incident made headlines. “I didn’t know such creatures were living in our neighbourhood,” he said.
