The University of Benin (UNIBEN), Edo State has secured N68.7bn approval of funds for the implementation of Solar mini-grid Electricity Project in the University alongside seven other federal government-owned Universities in Nigeria.
The federal government’s approval of the funds was announced by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, after the Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President Tinubu.
Other benefiting institutions in the present phase are: University of Lagos, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and the University of Ibadan. Others are Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Federal University, Dutse and Federal University, Wukari.
The University of Benin spokesperson, Dr (Mrs) Benedicta Ehanire who confirmed this on Tuesday August 12th 2025 in a statement, said the University Community is agog, following the news.
She said the Vice Chancellor, University of Benin, Professor Edoba Omoregie, SAN, was full of praise for President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for fulfilling his promise of upscaling tertiary education in the country through targeted funding of pressing needs.
Omoregie said the President’s gesture confirms his commitment to the provision of stable electricity supply in higher institutions to boost research and learning as part of efforts to reposition public tertiary institutions for national development.
The project, tagged Energizing Education, is the 4th Phase of the Federal Government’s strategic plan to provide stable and affordable electricity for federal public tertiary institutions across the Country.
The project, which is being facilitated through the Rural Electrification Agency of the Federal Government, is expected to be completed in less than nine months, according to the statement by Ehanire.
