The Federal Government is considering an electricity tariff increase for customers outside the Band-A category in a bid to improve the financial stability of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
The proposed adjustment aims to align tariffs for other customer categories more closely with the N206/kW currently paid by Band-A consumers, who make up approximately two million customers.
Speaking at the public presentation of the National Integrated Electricity Policy (NIEP) and Nigeria Integrated Resource Plan (NIRP) in Abuja, Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, stressed that the government could no longer sustain the N3 trillion power sector subsidy.
Adelabu highlighted that power generation and distribution increased by 35% in 2024, making financial sustainability a priority for maintaining and expanding electricity supply across the country.
