It is a truism that the Federal Government has initiated various means and ways to ameliorate the negative impact of the economy on the masses. While these efforts are commendable, I am of the opinion that there are better options that would deliver practical and sustainable benefits to the masses than the current practices.
Therefore, I would like to respectfully recommend that, instead of distributing subsidy funds to unidentified individuals for political purposes, the government should consider introducing a structured monthly income support programme for unemployed Nigerian youths.
Such a programme would provide temporary financial assistance to unemployed youths to help them meet their basic needs and become more self-sustaining while they seek employment, acquire vocational skills, or establish small businesses.
This approach would not only provide immediate relief but could also help reduce youth involvement in crime, social unrest, and other activities driven by economic hardship. The programme should be properly documented, transparent, and targeted at genuinely unemployed and vulnerable youths, regardless of political affiliation.
The program should consciously be directed at those genuinely in need and not to every Dick and Harry as it is with the current practice; where unidentified individuals, some of which are even in financially sustaining employment or ventures.
Government resources should be used to empower the people and address the root causes of poverty and insecurity, rather than being used primarily for political patronage.
As the saying goes, “A hungry man is an angry man.” When young people have hope, basic support, and opportunities to earn a decent living, they are more likely to contribute positively to society and less likely to turn to crime.
I therefore strongly recommend that the Federal Government consider establishing a well-monitored National Youth Income Support and Empowerment Programme as part of its efforts to reduce unemployment, poverty, crime, and social instability in Nigeria.
Investing in our youths is investing in the future of Nigeria.
