The Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to inclusive, people-centered development, calling for deeper collaboration between government institutions and community-based media.
The Governor, ably represented by the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, made the call while addressing participants at the Nigeria Development Summit organized by the Federated Union of Community Newspaper Publishers of Nigeria (FUCNPN). The summit, held on 26 November at the NUJ Secretariat in Asaba, brought together media executives, government officials, traditional rulers, and other development stakeholders.
While speaking on the theme “Enhancing Collaborative Initiatives for Transformative Growth and Development of Nigeria,” Governor Oborevwori emphasized that sustainable national progress is anchored on collective effort
“Progress is neither accidental nor solitary. It is driven by collective action, shared responsibility, and the power of grassroots voices,” he noted, stressing that community newspapers remain indispensable in amplifying local perspectives and shaping national discourse.
He commended community publishers for their resilience in the face of economic hardship and rapid technological change, stressing that their role has deepened democracy, strengthened public accountability, and keeping citizens informed. He noted that Nigeria’s development must be co-created—built through inclusive engagement rather than imposed from the top.
“The development of Nigeria cannot be dictated solely from Abuja or Asaba. It must emerged from collaboration, mutual understanding, and shared responsibility,” he stated.
While highlighting some key areas of his administration focus, he expressed satisfaction that education, healthcare, infrastructure development, youth empowerment, and transparent governance are experiencing turn around and progress.
He urged community media platforms to continue showcasing government achievements while offering constructive criticism that supports equitable and sustainable growth.
Governor Oborevwori applauded FUCNPN for convening the summit and expressed optimism that the dialogue would spark innovative ideas and foster new partnerships. He called for stronger cooperation between government and grassroots media to combat misinformation, amplify community voices, and advance the vision of a peaceful, prosperous, and just Nigeria.
