The Ilorin murder saga that has gripped Kwara State since August has taken a shocking final turn. Ekene Enemor, the husband of the late Esther Enemor — gruesomely butchered in Temidire 6, Egbejila community — confessed to police that he ordered her killing but not the dismemberment, only to die shortly after at an undisclosed hospital.
Saturday INDEPENDENT, which first broke the story, learnt from police sources that Enemor admitted hiring an accomplice to kill his wife, popularly known as ‘Iya Ibeji,’ but expressed horror that her remains were mutilated. Investigators are now probing whether his accomplice is tied to ritual killings or organ trafficking.
But the confessed killer never lived to see the case through. According to the police, Enemor fell gravely ill during interrogation and later died in hospital from what was described only as an “undisclosed illness.” His sudden death has deepened public speculation over the true scope of the crime.
The grisly episode began on August 22 when neighbour Ahmed Salman spotted bloodstains at the Enemor residence. Hours later, Esther’s mutilated remains were found in multiple locations — her torso, limbs, and head separated. Initial suspicion fell on Enemor’s younger brother, Sylvester, who was arrested but later freed when detectives discovered inconsistencies in Ekene’s alibi.
Crack investigators zeroed in on the husband after his children contradicted his claims of being at home in Kaiama during the killing. He also inexplicably described details of a masked suspect spotted leaving the crime scene — though he insisted he wasn’t present that morning.
“When confronted, he confessed to commissioning the killing,” Kwara State Police Commissioner Victor Ojo said at a Thursday briefing. “But he insisted the dismemberment was not his instruction. Our investigation continues to track other suspects believed to be at large.”
The fallout within the family has been devastating. Enemor’s relatives have publicly disowned him, while his children have rejected him outright, warning him never to return home.
With his sudden death, the police probe is shifting to identify his mysterious accomplice, even as the Ilorin community remains haunted by the brutality of a crime that has left more questions than answers
