President of the Ijaw Women Rights Protection Forum, IWRP, comrade Hilda Amogha has decried the long years of political marginalisation and other forms of injustices Ijaw women faced in Niger Delta region.
That time has come for Ijaw women in Nigeria and diaspora to work to take their right positions in politics and other areas of human endeavour.
She said this during an interview with Congress Newspaper, according to her this is the right time for Ijaw women to participate in politics and vie in different electoral offices to end the silencing of Ijaw women’s voices in leadership, decision-making, and media representation. Speaking out against the marginalization of women in Ijaw Nation, Amogha emphasised that true progress cannot be achieved if women’s voices are ignored.
“The voices of Ijaw women must be heard, respected, and valued,” Amogha declared. “One of the greatest injustices in Ijaw Nation today is the silencing of Ijaw women’s voices. Women have been pushed aside, ignored in leadership or decision-making, and misrepresented in the media. This must change.”
Amogha advocated for a shift in societal perception, where women are seen not just in stereotypical roles such as mothers, wives, or caregivers, but also as leaders, professionals, innovators, and change-makers. “When women’s voices are heard, justice is stronger, leadership is wiser, and society is better for everyone,” she asserted.
The Ijaw Women Rights Protection Forum is pushing for greater inclusivity and representation of women in governance, families, and communities. Amogha’s message is clear: Ijaw women will no longer be silenced, and their voices must be respected and valued in all spheres of society.
As the call for change gains momentum, it remains to be seen how Ijaw Nation will respond to the demands of its women. One thing is certain, however: the voices of Ijaw women will not be silenced
