The Federal High Court 2 sitting in Asaba, Delta State, on Thursday granted bail to journalist Tega Oghenedoro, popularly known as Fejiro Oliver, after spending nearly three weeks in detention at the Ogwashi-Uku Correctional Centre.
Oliver was arrested in Abuja following allegations of cyberstalking leveled against him by the Inspector General of Police, who accused him of making defamatory Facebook posts about Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Senator Ede Dafinone.
The police had earlier amended the two-count charge in a case marked FHC/ASB/163c/2025, signed by CSP Gladys Imegu, R.O. Eze, and Dr. R.O. Ishiguzo.
At a previous sitting, Justice Olufunmilola A. Agbaje had adjourned ruling on Oliver’s bail application to October 16, 2025, ordering that he remain in custody.
However, following renewed arguments from his counsel, human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, the court on Thursday granted bail to the journalist under strict conditions pending trial.
Earlier, Effiong had filed a fundamental rights enforcement suit at the same court, challenging Oliver’s prolonged detention without trial. In response, the court directed the Nigeria Police Force to explain within 48 hours why Oliver should not be released unconditionally, after he had already spent 16 days in custody
