Daniel Onyishi, the Director of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Anambra State, who was abducted on June 12, 2025, has regained his freedom. He was rescued on Sunday following a coordinated operation involving police forces and undercover operatives from the NDLEA.
Onyishi was kidnapped by unidentified gunmen along Winner Road in Awka after reportedly being trailed. His release marks the end of a 10-day ordeal and he is currently receiving medical care at a confidential hospital, according to police reports.
Confirming the development, the spokesman of the Anambra State Police Command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, credited the success of the rescue to a joint operation led by the NDLEA’s Zone 12 Commander, Mrs. Florence Ezeonye, and supported by other security agencies.
Ikenga refrained from disclosing whether ransom was paid, but assured that the Police Commissioner, CP Ikioye Orutugu, had updated the national police hierarchy and activated further directives from the Inspector-General of Police to ensure the perpetrators are apprehended.
Onyishi’s abduction had drawn national concern and reignited calls for enhanced security measures in Anambra State, especially in response to the rising threat of kidnappings targeting public officials.
Efforts are ongoing to track down the attackers and ensure justice is served.
