A 40-year-old Chief Park Ranger with the Old Oyo National Park, Ajeiigbe Jacob, has been found hanging from a rope tied to a tree in a forest area of Tede, Oyo State, four days after he was reported missing.
Jacob was discovered in the Iyanla area of Tede, where his body was reportedly found suspended from the tree in circumstances the police suspect may be suicide.
According to counterinsurgency expert and security analyst Zazgazola Makama, the discovery was reported to the Tede Police Division on Friday, August 21, 2026, by Babatunde Abdulrasheed, a forest ranger attached to the Old Oyo National Park.
Makama quoted a police source as saying that Abdulrasheed arrived at the station at about 8:00 a.m. and reported that the missing ranger had been found in the bush.
The source said Jacob was found “hanging from a rope tied to a tree,” prompting the police to immediately deploy operatives to the location.
A team led by the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO), Tede Division, subsequently proceeded to the scene to assess the circumstances surrounding the discovery.
Police personnel reportedly photographed the scene as part of the preliminary investigation before lowering Jacob’s body from the tree.
The circumstances leading to the ranger’s death remain unclear, as police have yet to establish what happened between the time he went missing and when his body was discovered.
The incident has also raised questions about what may have led the Chief Park Ranger to the forest location and the events preceding his death.
The police have commenced investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the death and determine whether the incident was indeed suicide or whether other factors may have been involved.
Following the discovery, the family of the deceased reportedly requested that his remains be released to them for burial.
The police reportedly documented the scene and recovered the body after completing the initial assessment.
Authorities have not disclosed further details about the deceased’s personal circumstances or any possible motive behind the suspected suicide.
