A police inspector, identified as Okechukwu Ezema, was fatally shot in Anambra State after he was allegedly caught in the act of robbing Point of Sale (POS) operators under the pretext of making arrests.
The incident, which occurred on Thursday, July 17, 2025, along Orodo Road near the Umueze Nwaoriubi axis, has sent shockwaves through the local community. Reports suggest that Ezema, attached to the Nwaoriubi Divisional Headquarters, was part of a group of officers accused of extorting and harassing POS operators in the area using a commercial bus.
According to eyewitnesses, the inspector met his end after angry residents apprehended him during one of the alleged illegal operations. A civilian was also killed in the process, though the identity of the second victim remains unknown.
Gruesome videos obtained by SaharaReporters show two lifeless bodies in a pool of blood, with voices in the background debating the identity of one of the deceased. Another clip shows a uniformed officer being paraded and taunted by a mob, repeatedly accused of being a thief.
While it remains unclear if the officer being paraded in the second video is the same one killed, community sources insist the group had long been notorious for preying on small businesses.
“The inspector and his team had turned Orodo Road into a hunting ground,” a community youth leader told SaharaReporters. “They moved around in a commercial bus, threatening POS operators and collecting money from them.”
An internal police communication confirmed the death of Inspector Ezema. The message read:

HE WAS KILLED TOGETHER WITH A CIVILIAN, WHILE THE TWO CONSTABLES HE WENT WITH RAN AWAY. MAY HIS GENTLE SOUL REST IN PEACE. AMEN.”
Despite the internal confirmation, the Anambra State Police Command has yet to issue a formal statement on the circumstances surrounding the incident. Repeated efforts to reach the command’s spokesperson, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, were unsuccessful as of press time.
Meanwhile, the killing comes amid renewed concern within police circles about rising hostility toward officers in plain clothes. SaharaReporters obtained an exclusive security memo dated July 17, warning officers across all 36 states to exercise caution while off-duty and armed.
The directive, signed by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Protection at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, cautioned that plain-clothed officers carrying firearms risk being mistaken for bandits or criminal elements, especially in volatile regions.
As investigations continue, the incident has reignited public debate over police accountability and the misuse of authority, particularly in communities where trust in law enforcement remains fragile.
