A Nigerian national, Gift Oladele, 24, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after raping a 19-year-old woman in Wrexham, Wales.
Oladele reportedly dragged the woman into woodland as she walked home after a night out. During the attack, he threatened and assaulted her before making a disturbing remark telling her that she had “had enough”.
The victim said she feared for her life during the attack and immediately reported what happened to her parents after managing to return home. Police arrested Oladele the following day.
The case has attracted widespread attention because Oladele had previously been jailed for two years in 2022 for falsely imprisoning another woman in Manchester.
Following that conviction, the UK Home Office ordered his deportation. However, Oladele successfully appealed the decision, arguing that removing him would interfere with his private and family life under Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights.
The tribunal ruled in his favour, allowing him to remain in the UK.
Less than three months after his conviction, Oladele committed the rape for which he has now received a 25-year prison sentence.
Police also found evidence on his phone indicating a longstanding interest in forced sexual abuse.
The case has intensified debate in the UK over deportation rules, human-rights protections and how foreign nationals convicted of serious crimes are dealt with.
