A Nigerian police officer identified as Bamidele Ojo, attached to Zone 2 Police Command, has been accused of brutally assaulting and stabbing an innocent civilian, Michael Ekundayo, in the Idimu area of Lagos State.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday, June 22, 2025, reportedly took place inside a local store where Ojo had stormed in and began physically attacking a man named Segun.
Eyewitnesses said the officer, in plainclothes but known to residents, slapped and punched Segun repeatedly.
When Segun tried to push him away, another customer, Michael, stepped in to intervene and de-escalate the fight.
But instead of backing off, Ojo allegedly turned his rage on the peacemaker.
He reportedly smashed a beer bottle on Michael’s head and stabbed him twice with the jagged shards, leaving him bleeding profusely.
Michael was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was admitted. Medical personnel reportedly demanded an urgent deposit of ₦50,000 out of an estimated ₦180,000 for treatment, given the severity of the injuries and blood loss.
Despite the brutality of the attack, sources told the media that Officer Ojo was neither arrested nor detained after the matter was reported at the Area M Police Command.
Instead, he was allowed to walk free, reportedly bragging that his powerful connections within the police high command would shield him from facing any consequences.
This incident has sparked renewed concerns about police brutality and corruption. Ojo is reportedly notorious for intimidating civilians in the area, frequently brandishing a gun to instil fear.
The victim’s family and eyewitnesses are demanding justice, insisting that the officer be held accountable for his actions.
Outrage has spread through the community, with residents questioning the credibility of ongoing police reforms and calling for Bamidele Ojo to be punished as a warning to other rogue officers.
The entire incident was reportedly captured on video, and multiple witnesses are ready to testify against the officer.
Sources familiar with the matter revealed that the attack may have been triggered by an earlier dispute involving Segun.
Ojo had reportedly tried to extort Segun and filed a petition against him at the Zone 2 Police Command.
However, Segun allegedly provided documents that neutralised the petition. The attack, many now believe, was a form of retaliation and intimidation.
As of the time of filing this report, the Lagos State Police Command had not issued a formal statement regarding the attack.
Efforts to reach the command’s spokesman, Benjamin Hundeyin, on his mobile line failed. He has also not responded to a follow-up message.
