United Kingdom authorities have launched an investigation into the death of three Nigerian-British sisters whose bodies were recovered from the sea near Brighton Beach.
The sisters were identified as Rebecca Walters, 31; Christina Walters, 32; and Jane Adetoro, 36, all from the Uxbridge area of West London.
Their bodies were found in the water near Black Rock car park, close to Brighton Beach, in the early hours of Wednesday, May 13, 2026.
Sussex Police said there is currently no evidence of criminality, foul play or third-party involvement, but detectives are continuing extensive inquiries to establish how the women came to be in the water.
Authorities said specialist detectives are reviewing hundreds of hours of CCTV footage and tracing the sisters’ final movements between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
Police have appealed to anyone who saw the sisters near Madeira Drive between 10 p.m. on Tuesday and 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday to come forward.
Coastguards believe the women may have entered the water, and that rough sea conditions could have made it difficult for them to return to shore.
Chief Superintendent Adam Hays said investigators would “leave no stone unturned” in determining what led to the tragic incident.
“I know this incident has had a profound impact on the local community in Brighton, and across the country, and I’d like to reassure the public we will leave no stone unturned in our investigation to understand exactly what led to the tragic events of that Wednesday morning,” Hays said.
He also urged members of the public to respect the privacy of the Walters family as they grieve.
“This investigation will continue in earnest, with Jane, Christina and Rebecca’s family at its centre. I would ask that they are given the privacy to come to terms with this terrible tragedy,” he added.
In an emotional tribute, their father, Joseph, described his daughters as the family’s “joy,” “strength” and “beautiful light.”
“Today, with a heart full of sorrow and love, I pay tribute to my beloved daughters, Jane, Christina, and Becky, whose lives ended so tragically far too soon,” he said.
“No words can truly describe the pain of losing three daughters in the prime of their lives. Jane, Christina, and Becky were more than daughters to me; they were my joy, my strength, and the beautiful light that filled our family with happiness and love.”
Joseph said although his daughters were no longer physically present, their memories would remain with the family forever.
“Though you are no longer here beside us, your spirits live on in our hearts every day. Love like yours never dies. You will forever remain a part of our lives, our prayers, and our memories,” he said.
The deaths have triggered shock and grief within the Nigerian and British communities, particularly in London and Brighton, as police continue inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
