Due to allegations of mishandling of $25 million in grants from FIFA and the Confederation of African Football, or CAF, between 2015 and 2025, the House of Representatives has decided to investigate the Nigerian Football Federation, NFF.
The decision came after a motion of urgent public concern was adopted on Tuesday, which was co-sponsored by Felix Nwaeke from Rivers State and Adedayo Adesola from Lagos State.
According to Adesola, Nigeria’s football performance has declined as a result of the NFF’s improper investment of millions of dollars in development subsidies.
He remembered that FIFA had questioned the NFF in December 2016 about how a $1.1 million grant was being handled, pointing out that $802,000 had not been properly accounted for. Solomon Dalung, the Sports Minister at the time, later mandated an impartial examination of the monies.
He additionally claimed that $1.2 million intended for the Birnin Kebbi Stadium’s development was misappropriated, asserting that the finished structure is inadequate and does not accurately represent the sum allegedly spent.
“With the Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifiers approaching, there is a need to take decisive action against the continued misuse of football funds,” Adesola said.
Under Speaker Tajudeen Abbas’s leadership, the House overwhelmingly decided to form a special investigation committee to examine NFF finances from 2015 onward.
Additionally, it instructed the NFF’s leadership to present to the committee with documentation of all grants obtained and expenses incurred during the reviewed time.
