The founder of One Love Family, Satguru Maharaj Ji, has vowed to work towards the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the incarcerated leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), if the group halts its Biafra radio broadcasts and sit-at-home directives.
Speaking in an interview with his temple’s in-house radio on Wednesday, Maharaj Ji acknowledged that Kanu is culpable of the terrorism charges brought against him, noting that anyone found guilty under the law could face the death penalty.
He said:
“We are, however, grateful that the matter has been put on hold. By the accusations, it is always going to be death, looking at the level of crimes attached to him, with the way and manner the constitution is written. Anybody who is accused of doing such a thing (terrorism) is sentenced to death. It is only out of grace that Kanu was able to escape.”
Maharaj Ji’s statement has stirred public debate, highlighting the tense dynamics between IPOB activities and efforts towards peace and negotiation in the region.
