According to a report by the Punch on Monday, December 22, 2025, a Lagos-based lawyer and Notary Public, Ifenyinwa Christopher, has recounted a harrowing ordeal of being attacked, robbed, and left for dead by a shuttle driver along the Asaba-Benin Expressway in Delta State. According to her account, she had chartered the shuttle on the evening of December 19 while in Asaba for a funeral. As they travelled through the Ogwashi-Uku area, the driver allegedly stopped the vehicle, brandished a gun, and began assaulting her, demanding she hand over all her possessions.
During the violent robbery, the assailant reportedly bit her eyelids and issued a chilling threat. Christopher stated that “the robber stated that he robs and kills regularly on the road and that he would kill me and nothing would happen.” Fearing for her life, she managed to kick open the passenger door and escape by jumping from the moving vehicle. She alleges that the driver then reversed and ran over her twice before speeding away.
Severely injured, Christopher crawled into nearby bushes and hid until daybreak, when she was discovered by villagers and police officers. She was subsequently taken to a government hospital for treatment of injuries to her back and eyes. In her appeal for justice and improved security, the lawyer highlighted the absence of adequate lighting, police posts, or checkpoints along that stretch of the expressway, which she believes facilitates such crimes.
She has called upon the Nigerian Bar Association, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Delta State Government to urgently address the security situation on the route. The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, acknowledged the inquiry but had not provided further details at the time of the report.
