The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has shut down its website, leaving a message that signals its departure from the global stage.
This move comes amid President Donald Trump’s ongoing efforts to reduce U.S. global funding as part of his “America First” foreign policy.
On Wednesday morning, the agency’s website displayed a notice announcing that all USAID direct hire personnel worldwide would be placed on administrative leave starting Friday, February 7, 2025.
The message clarified that specific staff responsible for mission-critical functions, core leadership, and designated programs would remain active, while those required to continue working would be informed on Thursday, February 6, 2025.
The statement read: “At 11:59 p.m. (EST) on Friday, February 7, 2025, all USAID direct hire personnel will be placed on administrative leave globally, except for designated personnel handling mission-critical functions, core leadership, and specially assigned programs. Essential personnel who are required to continue working will be notified by Agency leadership on Thursday, February 6, 2025, by 3:00 p.m. (EST).”
For those stationed outside the United States, USAID is preparing a case-by-case plan to facilitate their return to the U.S., in collaboration with the Department of State. The agency stated that it would arrange and fund return travel within 30 days for personnel and terminate Personal Services Contractor (PSC) and International Services Contractor (ISC) contracts unless deemed essential.
Additionally, the agency will consider exceptions based on factors such as personal or family hardship, mobility, safety concerns, or other reasons, including the timing of dependents’ school terms, medical needs, pregnancy, and more. Further guidance on how to request exceptions will be shared soon.
