Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has announced a new minimum wage of N104,000 for workers in the state civil service, making Imo one of the first states in Nigeria to implement a substantial wage review in line with recent federal directives.
The governor disclosed this during a meeting with members of the state labour force at the Government House, Owerri, where he also revealed that the monthly salary of medical doctors in the state civil service had been increased to N582,000.
Uzodimma explained that the wage increase was made possible by a boost in Imo’s internally generated revenue and an upsurge in federal allocations. According to him, the new salary structure is designed not only to reward civil servants but also to stimulate economic activities across the state.
In addition, the governor announced the release of ₦16 billion to clear gratuity arrears owed to pensioners, a move he said was necessary to cushion the effects of economic hardship on retirees.
The development comes just days after President Bola Tinubu urged governors to “wet the ground” by delivering tangible governance and people-oriented policies at the grassroots level.
Governor Uzodimma stressed that his administration remains committed to prioritizing workers’ welfare, noting that improved salaries will enhance productivity and morale in the public sector.
