Why I ‘married’ myself at 45 – Denrele Edun

Media personality and actor Denrele Edun has explained why he chose to symbolically marry himself as part of activities marking his 45th birthday.

The entertainer announced the unconventional union in a video shared on social media.

Speaking via his Instagram Story on Tuesday, Denrele, who turned 45 on June 13, said the self marriage was his way of celebrating a 45 year journey marked by challenges, reinvention, controversy, resilience, heartbreak and triumph.

“Till death didn’t do us part? So I married myself. After 45 years of chaos, glitter, survival, reinvention, controversy, resilience, heartbreak and triumph, I remain the greatest love story I’ve ever known,” he wrote.

He added that the symbolic act was a tribute to the one person who had remained with him through every phase of life.

According to him, the gesture was also an embrace of every version of himself that contributed to his journey.

“I am the bride and the groom. And I am marrying every version of myself that fought to get here. Today, I marry the only person who never left my side: ME!” he declared.

Denrele ended the post with the words: “The Bride. The Groom. The Happily Ever After.”

Known for his distinctive fashion style and television presence, Denrele began his career as a child presenter on NTA’sKiddievision 101before becoming a presenter at Soundcity and later a VJ on Channel O. Over the years, he has also worked as an actor, model and entertainer, building a reputation as one of Nigeria’s most recognisable media personalities.

Born in Hamburg, Germany, to a Yoruba father and an Indian Mauritian mother, Denrele studied English Education at the University of Lagos and has won several awards for his work in television and entertainment
