The Chairman of the South-South Caucus of the House of Representatives, Hon. Fred Agbedi, has explained why former Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, was not sanctioned during the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on Monday.
According to Agbedi, Wike is not the only PDP member guilty of anti-party activities, stressing that some party leaders are still openly supporting the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) government.
“It’s not about Wike alone. It is beyond Wike. There are a lot of others who have played anti-party in one way or the other, who are members of PDP, who are saying, ‘No, I’m going to support so-and-so person, I’m going to vote for so-and-so person.’ That’s clearly anti-party,” he said.
The lawmaker noted that the PDP, as Nigeria’s main opposition party, is more focused on rebuilding its structure and unity ahead of the 2027 general elections than expelling members.
“Because PDP understands the kind of crisis it is going through and is resolving, it will not be chasing those people. Rather, it will organize itself first before it thinks of the appropriate way to deal with matters like that,” Agbedi explained.
He stressed that while the party is aware of those playing “excessive roles” inimical to its survival, it would act at the right time to safeguard its stability.
As of today, I don’t think that the priority of PDP will be to drive one person or the other out of the party. We’re taking note. And I’m sure that at the appropriate time, appropriate actions will be taken by the party,” he added.
Agbedi maintained that the PDP is determined to overcome its internal crisis and emerge stronger, united, and better positioned to challenge the ruling party in 2027.
