An Upper Customary Court sitting in Kaduna State has reportedly dissolved the marriage between a woman, Tabitha Iliya, and her husband, Iliya Yaran, citing irreconcilable differences.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the presiding judge, Patience Musa, made the ruling after all avenues for reconciliation between the couple were exhausted and after the petitioner clearly expressed her unwillingness to continue the marriage.
Earlier in the proceedings, the defendant had requested the court to grant him additional time to attempt a second reconciliation with his wife, emphasizing that their six children were his motivation for wanting to save the marriage
The complainant, however, informed the court that their marriage, which was contracted in 2000 under Mada customs, was coming to an end due to lack of financial support, instances of assault, and threats from her husband.
She explained that her husband’s failure to provide care and financial support had compelled her to engage in an extramarital relationship when their daughter fell ill and required medical attention.
