Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has approved a major increase in the monthly allowances of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state, boosting their total take-home pay to as high as ₦127,000.
The new policy raises Abia State’s stipend for corps members from ₦4,000 to ₦50,000, marking one of the most significant state-level increments in recent years. According to a statement from the Abia State Government, the revised structure includes the Federal Government’s newly reviewed ₦77,000 monthly allowance for corps members.
Added to this is a ₦20,000 basic allowance for all corps members serving in Abia State.
Corps members assigned to state government establishments will earn more, with teachers receiving an additional ₦10,000, while medical personnel will get an extra ₦30,000, bringing their total monthly earnings to ₦107,000 and ₦127,000, respectively.
The government said the initiative is aimed at motivating corps members and addressing manpower shortages in critical sectors across the state.
“The New Abia has paved the way for a new era for corps members. Governor Otti’s administration isn’t just talking — it’s acting,” the statement said.
It highlighted the administration’s investments in improving the NYSC Orientation Camp in Bende Local Government Area, including renovated buildings, internal roads, upgraded power infrastructure, and enhanced logistics support.
“Whether it’s fixing internal roads within the NYSC camp, installing power equipment, or upgrading dilapidated buildings, the Governor’s hands-on approach is transforming the NYSC experience in Abia,” the statement added.
Despite the camp being a federal facility, the government emphasized that Governor Otti is committed to improving any institution within the state, regardless of ownership.
