The Ekiti State Police Command has arrested a 38-year-old man, Ismail Tunji Ibiyeye, over the alleged killing of 42-year-old trader and mother of three, Olaitan Amere.
The tragic incident occurred at Mrs. Amere's home in Ajegunle, Ido-Ekiti. According to her family, there had been an earlier attempt to set the house on fire just a day before the attack after a passerby noticed flames coming from one of the windows and quickly raised the alarm.
Her relatives claimed that the attackers returned on the evening of June 13, 2026, where they allegedly attacked her with machetes, leaving her with multiple injuries. They further alleged that the assailants tried to burn her body by covering it with clothes and other household items before abandoning a container of petrol at the scene.
The family became alarmed after repeated efforts to reach Mrs. Amere by phone failed. They later traced the phone to her residence, where they discovered her lifeless body. They also claimed she had received threats before the incident.
Confirming the arrest, the police said the suspect, who was reportedly in a relationship with the deceased and works as an environmental staff member at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti, is currently in custody and has provided statements to investigators.
The Ekiti State Police Command said investigations are ongoing and emphasized that the suspect remains presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
