Nollywood actress Doris Umezurike Ogala (also known as Dr. Doris Ogala) has emerged as the governorship candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) for Abia State in the 2027 general elections.
The announcement follows the party’s primary election held in Aba, where Ogala secured the ticket amid celebrations by her supporters, who chanted slogans promising a “New Abia” focused on economic growth, quality education, and improved governance. Posters and videos from the event have circulated widely on social media.
The African Action Congress (AAC) is a political party founded by activist and journalist Omoyele Sowore, who has been its presidential candidate in previous elections. The party positions itself as a progressive, revolutionary alternative emphasizing anti-corruption, good governance, and youth empowerment. Ogala’s emergence marks a notable entry of a celebrity figure into serious contention for the Abia governorship, pitting her against the incumbent Governor Alex Otti of the Labour Party, who is widely seen as seeking re-election.
Ogala, an indigene of Abia State with roots in the Southeast, is a well-known Nollywood actress, producer, and media personality. Born on December 5, 1988, she has built a career in the Nigerian film industry while maintaining an active and often outspoken presence on social media.
Ogala’s political foray comes in the wake of a high-profile and deeply personal controversy that dominated headlines in late 2025 and early 2026. The actress was embroiled in a public feud with popular pastor Chris Okafor of the Mountain of Liberation and Miracles Ministries (Grace Nation).
The dispute erupted after a video of Pastor Okafor’s engagement to another woman surfaced online. Ogala accused the cleric of having been in a romantic relationship with her since 2017, during which he allegedly promised marriage, introduced her to family members, and contributed to the breakdown of her previous relationship. She claimed emotional distress, significant financial involvement (including allegations around tens of millions of naira), and other grievances. The actress issued public ultimatums and made several explosive allegations that went viral.
The saga escalated with police involvement, reports of arrests and questioning, a withdrawn apology, and counter-claims. In December 2025, Pastor Okafor publicly apologised to Ogala before his congregation, kneeling as he sought forgiveness for “mistakes” and specifically naming her. Ogala reacted to the apology, while the matter continued to generate intense social media debate, legal threats (including a reported ₦1 billion lawsuit), and discussions about celebrity-pastor relationships, privacy, and accountability.
Reactions to Ogala’s AAC candidacy have been mixed. Some celebrate the bold move of a “real” and outspoken Abia daughter challenging the status quo, while others express skepticism about her political experience and the circumstances of the primary. Reports emerged of internal party disputes, with at least one former aspirant, Chioma Ifemeludike, alleging disruptions and irregularities during the process.
As of now, there has been no official comment from AAC national leadership or Omoyele Sowore on the Abia primary outcome. Political observers note that while celebrity candidacies often generate buzz, translating visibility into electoral success in Abia’s competitive landscape especially against a performing incumbent will require strong grassroots mobilization and clear policy articulation.
